Lourdes Lugo Lopez Obituary (1942 - 2024) - Springfield, Massachusetts

Lourdes Ileana Lugo Lopez, an embodiment of love, compassion, and joy, left us on November 22, 2024. Born on April 30, 1942, in Guayama, Puerto Rico, Lourdes was a beacon of love, wisdom, and resilience. As Maya Angelou once said, "I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it." Lourdes embodied this spirit throughout her life, a life that was filled with passion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to education. For more than thirty years, Lourdes served as an English teacher in Puerto Rico's Department of Education. Her classroom at Escuela Simón Madera became a sanctuary for her students, a place where they could not only learn the complexities of a new language but also the nuances of life. Lourdes was more than a teacher; she was a mentor, a guiding light, and a source of inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to learn from her. She carried the torch of knowledge, illuminating the path for many young minds. As Nelson Mandela famously said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Lourdes truly believed this and lived it every day. Lourdes is survived by her loving daughters, Rosa Valentin Lugo and Lourdes Valentin, and her cherished granddaughters, Yara DePalma, Carol Gonzalez, Kimberlie Valentin, and Daenerys Santisteban-Valentin, her Grandson: Roberto Santisteban-Valentin, Five Great Grandchildren: Nicholas DePalma, Jomar Bonilla, Ryan Fernandez, Kayden Fernandez and Camilla DePalma, and a host of family and friends. She is preceded in death by her beloved parents: Federico Lugo and Carmen Lopez, her dear husband: Eugenio Valentin Cintron and her son: Eugenio Valentin Lugo. As Lourdes transitions to her next journey, we remember her not with sorrow but with gratitude. She was a remarkable woman who painted the world with the vibrant colors of her spirit and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched. Lourdes will be put to rest in her home town where she was born and raised, Guayama, Puerto Rico.
