With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of Gladys Rivera, an extraordinary woman who embodied love, resilience, and joy. Born on January 19, 1941, in Cidra, Puerto Rico, Gladys was a beacon of strength and tenderness who touched many lives with her infectious laugh, adventurous spirit, and nurturing soul. She departed from this world on March 17, 2026, leaving a legacy of unity, strength, and love that will continue to live on through her loved ones.
Gladys was loved by her eternal flame, Francisco. Francisco and Gladys began their journey in Puerto Rico before making their home in the barrios of Manhattan, eventually settling by the ocean in Seagate, Coney Island. There, Gladys embraced the rhythm of ocean life, often sharing vivid stories of her days by the water. She took great pride in her time as an impressive fisherwoman, reflecting her strength, independence, and deep connection to the sea.
Gladys was born into the Catholic faith and remained a devoted child of God throughout her life. Her faith was not simply something she practiced—it was the foundation upon which she lived. It guided her choices, shaped her character, and gave her strength in both joyful and difficult moments.
She was an exceptional cook, known for the love and authenticity she infused into her traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. Her knowledge of plants and her knack for nurturing fruit trees were a testament to her connection with nature. She cared for many animals, raised birds, and often fondly shared memories of her time horseback riding —moments that reflected her gentle spirit and connection to nature. As Psalm 96:12 says, "Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy," so too did Gladys find joy in all of God’s creations.
At the core of Gladys' life was her family, which was her greatest love and most cherished accomplishment. Her home was a gathering of warmth, laughter, and unwavering support, always making each person feel seen, valued, and deeply loved. Her husband, Francisco; her son Reinaldo and wife Maria; her daughter Ana Maria; and granddaughter Gladys along with her partner Joe, her grandson Francisco and his partner Kim were the recipients of her abundant love and devotion. Gladys is survived by her husband, her four children and a multitude of grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Domingo Freire and Antonia Castro; her grandson, Reinaldo Rivera; her sisters Ana and Ramona along with her four brothers.
Gladys' life was a testament to the power of love, faith, and resilience. Her memory will forever be cherished, and her spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. As we remember Gladys, we are reminded of the verse from 1 Corinthians 16:14, "Let all that you do be done in love," which she embodied every day of her life. We invite you to leave memories and upload photos to the memorial page, celebrating the life of this remarkable woman. May we all strive to live with the same love, faith, and joy that Gladys Rivera demonstrated throughout her life.
